Bartending School
"I've been bartending and bar managing for nearly 20 years and this is the BEST teaching tool you'll ever find on the subject. The "courses" and "certification programs" offered by schools and online associations are for people who want to waste their time and have too much money to spend. This video is all you need."

Layered Drinks

Layered drinks work because the heaviest alcohol sinks while the lighter alcohol floats on top. As a general rule:

  • Liquers with high alcohol content float. The higher the proof (percentage of alcohol) the lighter the liquor. So spirits (R, V, G, . . . etc.) are poured last and float on top.

  • Sugar is heavy and sinks. Flavored liqueurs will sink to the bottom. Syrups are heavier and should be poured first and form the bottom layer.

  • Irish Cream is the exception. Because it is cream based, it separates from liqueurs of similar weight. This property makes it an ideal liqueur for layered drinks - not to mention it tastes great (how can you go wrong combining sugar, cream and alcohol).

The following lists alcohols and ingredients: lightest (spirits) on top of chart, heaviest (syrups) on bottom. These are a few favorites to get you started, not a complete list.

As always, don't spend any time memorizing specific weights or complex formulas. Learn the layered shots listed here and you'll find most layered drinks are based on a these classic combinations.
